Absent justice: The “escrache” movement

The organization known as H.I.J.O.S., founded in 1995 by the sons and daughters of detained-disappeared persons, began to carry out “escraches” (public shaming)- direct and noisy actions targeting the residences and workplaces of members of the repressive apparatus and their civilian accomplices who benefited from of impunity. The actions included working with neighbors and social organizations, along with a great display of artistic activism. Jorge Luis Magnacco, a doctor and former navy captain who had worked at ESMA assisting in the births of the abducted women, was the first to be publicly exposed or ‘escrachado’ in January 1997.
