Luciano Benjamin Menéndez, the head of the Third Army Corps, was prosecuted in the early years of democratic transition. Yet, he received a pardon from President Carlos Menem in 1989. Therefore, the investigation into his actions came to a halt for many years upon passing of the Clean Slate and Due Obedience Acts, to be only be resumed three decades later when the impunity laws were found unconstitutional. In the case of Menéndez, the pardon was declared unconstitutional and null in 2005 by the Federal Higher Court of Córdoba, at the request of the prosecutor's office. In 2008, the first trial for crimes against humanity in Córdoba concluded. The case known as "Brandalis" was about four victims kidnapped and held captive in La Perla until their execution. Menéndez was sentenced to life imprisonment. In addition, seven other military officers were convicted as well. On August 25, 2016, the verdict was handed down in La Perla, Campo de la Ribera, and D2 mega-case. This was the largest trial of State-sponsored terrorism in the province of Córdoba. It judged crimes against humanity perpetrated against 711 victims before and after the military coup of March 24, 1976.
