The first judicial pronouncement against impunity

In 1998, Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo filed a legal action for the misappropriation of Claudia Poblete, who was abducted when she was only eight months old. In 2000, CELS filed a complaint against those who held responsible for the forced disappearance of José Liborio Poblete and Gertrudis Hlaczik, Claudia's father and mother. The human rights organizations argued that the Clean Slate and Due Obedience Acts should be declared null and void as they contradicted the standards embodying international human rights. On March 6, 2001, the Honorable Judge Gabriel Cavallo declared both Acts contrary to the National Constitution and the treaties human rights in force at the time of their enactment, and declared them invalid, unconstitutional, and null. This decision was ratified by the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation in June 2005.
