Sentence in ESMA mega-case, City of Buenos Aires

The events at the clandestine detention center that operated at the ESMA or Escuela de Mecánica de la Armada (known as the Navy Petty-Officers School or the Higher School of Mechanics of the Navy) were addressed in three trials. In 2007, the first trial had Border Patrol Officer Héctor Febrés as its sole defendant. However, he died before sentencing. The second trial resumed the judicial process halted by the Clean Slate and Due Obedience Acts and resulted in 16 people convicted for crimes against 86 victims. The third trial in the "mega-case" –also known as the "Unified ESMA" case– began in 2012. It is considered the largest case in the history of the Argentine Judiciary. The trial charged 68 defendants with crimes committed against 789 people. It ended up with 29 individuals sentenced to life imprisonment, 19 others sentenced to terms ranging from 8 to 25 years, and six acquittals (11 defendants passed away during the trial and three others were dismissed for health reasons).

It was the first trial to prove the implementation of death flights. Two of the aircraft pilots, members of the Argentine Border Patrol, Mario Daniel Arru and Alejandro Domingo D'Agostino, were sentenced to life imprisonment.
