Sentencing in the Trial of Judges, Mendoza

This trial, which began in 2014, addressed the repression system in the province of Mendoza in a comprehensive way. As the Court concluded, it had been implemented by the Army, the Air Force, the Provincial Police Force, the Federal Police Force, and the Penitentiary Police Force. In addition to the 21 military and police officers, four judicial officers were convicted. They were federal judges Luis Miret and Rolando Carrizo, federal prosecutor Otilio Romano, and public defense attorney Guillermo Petra Recabarren. They were found guilty of various crimes, including torture, murder, and unlawful imprisonment, among others. The Court found that the judicial officers omitted acts inherent to their duties, thereby enabling the commission of crimes against humanity. The rejection of habeas corpus petitions and their negligence in addressing the complaints filed by the families of individuals who had disappeared were some of the judicial practices under their judicial responsibilities involved in the systematic plan.
