In the city of La Plata, in the Province of Buenos Aires, Miguel Etchecolatz, the former director of investigations of Buenos Aires Police Force, was sentenced to life imprisonment on September 19. The case investigated the murders of six individuals and the kidnapping of two others. In its judgement, the court ruled that what had happened during the dictatorship could be classified as genocide, irrespective of the legal classification under which the sentence was imposed. Etchecolatz had already been convicted in 2004 for the abduction of a girl from Pozo de Banfield clandestine detention center.
Jorge Julio López, whose kidnapping was the subject matter of the trial and had given a crucial testimony, disappeared for the second time on that same sentencing day. His disappearance remains unresolved to this day.
