On August 15, 1972, twenty-five political prisoners escaped from Unit No. 6 of the Federal Penitentiary Service in Rawson, a city in the Province of Chubut. Six of them made it to Chile, while nineteen others were apprehended at Trelew Airport. Early in the morning of August 22, military personnel executed sixteen of them. Forty years later, the Federal Oral Court of Comodoro Rivadavia sentenced three former marines to life imprisonment for their roles in the massacre. Furthermore, the Court declared it a crime against humanity. At present, one of the perpetrators, Roberto Bravo, lives in the United States. In 2022, he was convicted for these acts in a civil jury trial held in a court in Florida, United States.
